Abstract

Various embodiments provide methods, apparatus, and non-transitory processor-readable storage media for implementing network path probing with a communication device by sending probe packets to a STUN server and receiving probe packet replies via a network connection. The communications device may increment a counter and transmit a test probe packet configured to be dropped at the first access point NAT, causing all subsequent NATs to release their IP / port mappings. The communications device may send another probe packet to the STUN server and receive a probe packet reply. The communications device may compare the first probe packet reply to the second probe packet reply to determine if the last IP address within the network path matches. By continuously incrementing the counter and querying access points, the communications device can determine the number of access points arranged along any given network path. The addition of NAT servers or the presence of an unexpected number of NAT servers may indicate the presence of a rogue access point.
