Embodiment Construction

[0059] Spectrum is the lifeblood of modern cellular communications. Current building practices for wireless mobile communications focus on designing systems for wide area coverage in frequency bands extending approximately between 400 MHz and 6 GHz. The growth of traffic on mobile networks has grown to the point where the mobile industry is in unanimous need for spectrum. Therefore, improving access to spectrum by means of spectrum sharing is of great interest to regulators.

[0060] In the unlicensed band, access to spectrum is usually opportunistic and shared through polite coexistence. Sharing spectrum using Licensed Shared Access (LSA) or Authorized Shared Access (ASA) typically proposes a division of usage rights, which may be based on geographical constraints or time of use between mobile operators and tenured users.

[0061] A typical use of this situation is to enable the use of frequency bands that are available to licensed users in some markets but are restricted i...

Abstract

According to some embodiments, a method for use in a first spectrum access system (SAS) server of authorizing spectrum access comprises: receiving, from a second SAS, information about one or more priority access license (PAL) protection areas (PPAs) served by the second SAS; receiving a spectrum grant request on behalf of one of a first PPA or a first general authorized access (GAA) user; determining whether granting the spectrum grant request may interfere with a second PPA geographically proximate the one of the first PPA or the first GAA user, wherein the second PPA is served by the secondSAS; and granting or denying the spectrum grant request based at least in part on the interference determination. The interference determination may comprise modeling the radio environment within thesecond PPA and surrounding areas based on the spectrum grant request to determine whether an aggregate interference level exceeds a threshold.

Description

technical field [0001] Particular embodiments are directed to wireless communications, and more specifically to verification of spectrum allocations using Priority Access License (PAL) Protected Areas (PPAs). Background technique [0002] Mobile cellular networks have evolved through four generations of standards, which operated over a wide range of frequency bands after 30 years before 2016. The leading fourth generation cellular standard is the E-UTRA air interface and is part of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) upgrade process to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) series of specifications. LTE and E-UTRA are often used interchangeably and are referred to herein as LTE. The LTE specification is the latest generation of a series that encompasses GSM / EDGE and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) / High Speed Packet Access within the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) / Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Radio Network (GERAN) (HSPA) or Univers...
