Problems solved by technology

This process can result in TCU temperatures above 85 degrees Celsius, which may exceed the TCU's maximum operating temperature
Operating the TCU under these conditions risks permanently damaging the TCU and resulting in expensive repairs to the vehicle owner

Abstract

A method and apparatus for component temperature control through switching are provided. A system includes a processor configured to determine that a telematics control unit component temperature is above a predefined maximum temperature. The processor is also configured to send a message to a remote communication server notifying the server that packet communication will be disabled and disable packet communication, responsive to the determination. The processor is further configured to enable binary user-data-embedded SMS message handling for remote commands received from the server, responsive to disabling the packet communication.

Description

technical field [0001] The illustrative embodiments relate generally to methods and apparatus for component temperature control through switching. Background technique [0002] Many vehicles now include on-board telematics capabilities that allow the vehicle to communicate remotely with external communication devices, even when the vehicle is parked and the owner is away from the vehicle. In the current model, the vehicle telematics control unit (TCU) is awakened by a process initiated by a wake-up SMS via a remote service accessed, eg, by a user's mobile device. The TCU can then establish a packet connection with the backend server, which allows the TCU to retrieve commands (eg, unlock). The retrieved commands can then be executed in the vehicle to perform the requested action. In addition, the TCU is usually installed near the roof antenna for convenience and saves components such as coaxial or other cables. [0003] For example, when the vehicle is parked in the summer...
