[0037] figure 1 A first type of assembly 2 is shown, comprising a mounting element 3 and a rotatable element 5 rotatably mounted on the mounting element 3 by a hinge 6 . The rotatable element 6 is rotatable within a limited range of rotation. In this non-limiting example, the rotatable element 5 extends substantially linearly from the hinge 6 and has a limited rotational range of approximately 90°, extending between an open position O and a closed position C. The sensor unit 10 is mounted on the rotatable element 5 .

[0038] figure 2 A second type of assembly 2 is shown, comprising a mounting element 3 and a rotatable element 5 rotatably mounted on the mounting element 3 via a shaft 6 . The rotatable element 6 is rotatable within a limited range of rotation. In this non-limiting example, the rotatable element 5 has a circular shape and has a limited range of rotation, which may be a full turn or multiple turns (not necessarily full turns). exist figure 2 In , a first ...

Abstract

The sensor unit (10) is mountable on a rotatable element (5) on a platform (3), which itself is movable and comprises: an orientation sensor arranged to acquire measurements depending on the orientation of the sensor unit a processor arranged to derive a rotational position signal indicative of the orientation of the rotatable element from the measurements; and a buffer arranged to buffer a series of recent measurements taken by the orientation sensor within a predetermined period of time. The processor derives the rotational position signal for correction to compensate for the effect of motion of the platform on the measurements based on the ensemble of the series of measurements buffered in the buffer.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a sensor for a rotatable element. Background technique [0002] In many applications it is desirable to sense the orientation of a rotatable rotatable element, for example to provide safety during operation of the rotatable element. In the event of a mechanical failure of the rotatable element or failure of the actuation system (which may eg be pneumatic), then the rotatable element may not be in the expected position, which may create safety issues. [0003] Various types of sensing techniques exist for sensing the rotation of a continuously rotating rotatable element. However, such sensing techniques typically rely on periodic measurements resulting from continuous motion, and thus cannot be directly applied to rotatable elements that can rotate within a limited range of rotation, or where changes in orientation typically occur sporadically. [0004] The first aspect of the invention addresses potential difficulties when th...
