Abstract

The present invention provides various exemplary systems, devices and methods for locking articulation surgical tools. In general, a surgical tool may include an elongated shaft having an end effector at a distal end thereof, the end effector configured to engage tissue. The end effector may be configured for articulation relative to the elongated shaft. The surgical tool may include a locking mechanism configured to lock the end effector in its current angled orientation. The surgical tool may be configured to be releasably coupled to a robotic surgical system configured to control various movements and actions associated with the surgical tool.

Description

technical field [0001] Methods and apparatus are provided for robotic surgery, and in particular for locking articulating robotic surgical tools. Background technique [0002] Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) devices are often preferred over traditional open surgical devices due to reduced postoperative recovery time and minimal scarring. Laparoscopic surgery is a type of MIS procedure in which one or more small incisions are made in the abdomen and a trocar is inserted through the incisions to create access to the abdominal cavity. Trocars are used to introduce various instruments and tools into the abdominal cavity and to provide insufflation to raise the abdominal wall over the organs. Instruments and tools can be used to engage and / or treat tissue in a variety of ways for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Endoscopic surgery is another type of MIS procedure in which an elongated flexible shaft is introduced into the body through a natural orifice. [0003] While tra...
