Embodiment Construction

[0016] Reference will now be made in detail to the embodiments, one or more examples of which are illustrated in the drawings. Each example is provided by way of explanation of the embodiment, not limitation of the invention. In fact, those skilled in the art will recognize that various modifications and changes can be made to the embodiments without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. For example, features illustrated or described as part of one embodiment can be used with another embodiment to yield yet a further embodiment. Accordingly, aspects of the present invention are intended to cover such modifications and variations.

[0017] Example aspects of the invention relate to determining an operating mode of an autonomous vehicle and controlling a failover response of the autonomous vehicle to a detected trigger event. A failover response may be a response, such as an action, by an autonomous vehicle (eg, its computing system) based at least in part on a ...

Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling a failover response of an autonomous vehicle are provided. In one example embodiment, a method includes determining, by one or more computing devices on-board an autonomous vehicle, an operational mode of the autonomous vehicle. The autonomous vehicle is configured to operate in at least a first operational mode in which a human driver is present in the autonomous vehicle and a second operational mode in which the human driver is not present in the autonomous vehicle. The method includes detecting a triggering event associated with the autonomous vehicle. The method includes determining actions to be performed by the autonomous vehicle in response to the triggering event based at least in part on the operational mode. The method includes providing one ormore control signals to one or more of the systems on-board the autonomous vehicle to perform the one or more actions in response to the triggering event.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to controlling the response of an autonomous vehicle to detected triggering events based on the mode of operation of the vehicle. Background technique [0002] An autonomous vehicle can sense its surroundings and determine its position based on information associated with its surroundings by using various sensor devices. This could allow autonomous vehicles to navigate without human intervention, and in some cases, even omit the use of a human driver entirely. In some cases, autonomous vehicles can be monitored by remote tracking systems. However, this monitoring is subject to potential communication delays. Contents of the invention [0003] Aspects and advantages of embodiments of the invention are set forth in part in the following description, or may be learned from the description or may be learned by practicing the embodiments. [0004] An example aspect of the invention relates to a computer-implement...
