The nozzles improve filter assembly function by flushing away large food particles with a stream of water to allow a continuous flow of fluid through the filter. Another advantageous feature is a sump assembly that includes a drain volute with a regulated vent for priming the drain pump. This adjustable vent allows the sump pump to operate more efficiently. Yet another advantageous feature is that the insertion sleeve for the filter assembly forms a displacement body to raise the liquid level in the cistern. Many dishwashers run on low water volumes to conserve water and reduce energy levels. Thus, the displacement body can provide more efficient fluid filtration by causing a higher water level in the filter assembly to allow fluid to flow into the filter.

A sump unit including a pump assembly may be provided for recirculating and draining liquid from the sump.
