Embodiment

[0067] Figure 3A depicts an embodiment according to the invention figure 2 An example of the registry and API used in the process 300. Example 300 includes process registry 110 , configuration registry 112 , external system API 302 , and actions registry 114 . Process registry 110 includes a shutdown command 304 for completing process S1P and a restart command 306 for completing process S2P.

[0068] Configuration registry 112 includes sequences S1C1 , S1C2 and S1C3 for the following verification actions: verify change control 308 , verify last backup 310 , and verify database instance 312 , respectively.

[0069] External system APIs include APIs for communicating with ticketing system 314 , dispatching system 316 , and database management system 318 . APIs for communicating with database management system 318 may include JDBC or ODBC.

[0070] The Action Registry 114 specifies the sequences S1A1 (i.e., abort the command and notify management of the command being aborte...

Abstract

An approach is provided for delivering a configuration based workflow in an IT system. A command initiated for execution is identified as being included in a list of commands. A set of parameters andpre-configured conditions associated with the identified command are determined. Validation action(s) that validate the command and are included in the configuration based workflow are determined. Thevalidation actions) are specified by respective interaction(s) with external system(s). Validation action(s) included in the configuration based workflow are performed by completing the interaction(s) with the external system(s) using the set of parameters. It is determined whether the validation action(s) are successfully completed. If the validation action(s) are successfully completed, the execution of the command is continued. If at least one of the validation action(s) is not successfully completed, the execution of the command is discontinued.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to managing information technology (IT) systems, and more particularly to delivering configuration-based workflows in IT systems. [0002] In response to the system administrator's The environment issues a shutdown or reboot command in the IT system, which initiates a corresponding system shutdown or system reboot. If the IT system includes a real-time application or database, the system terminates processing associated with the real-time application or database. Data corruption in the database may occur if any database transactions occur while shutting down or restarting. Therefore, if a shutdown or restart command is inadvertently invoked due to human error, critical business functionality is lost. In known IT system environments, there is no mechanism to control commands issued inadvertently or unintentionally by privileged (ie, root) users performing system shutdowns, system restarts, or other critical system ac...
