[0036] The present invention provides a dunnage conversion system for automatic or manual production of expanded slot sheet packaging material from a supply of unexpanded slot sheet material in compact, easily resupply equipment. Unexpanded slotted sheets may also be referred to as sheets or slotted sheets, for example. The dunnage conversion system facilitates the rapid production of expandable packaging products, also known as intumescent dunnage products, increasing output and performance. Furthermore, the dunnage conversion system is compact, has a relatively small footprint and occupies a relatively small volume, thus facilitating transport and storage of the system. The dunnage conversion equipment of the dunnage conversion system is also easily loaded with a supply of unexpanded sheet material.

Abstract

The dunnage conversion assembly includes a supply (14) of expandable sheet material and a dunnage conversion device configured to expand the expandable sheet material. The apparatus comprises: a frame (60); a feeder support (80) mounted to the frame to support a feeder of sheets; and first and second expansion members (130, 132) supported at the feeder The downstream member is rotatably mounted to the frame to receive the sheet between the first expansion member and the second expansion member. At least one of the first expansion member and the second expansion member is rotatably driven. The drive assembly of the apparatus includes a drive member (92) and a power unit (104) that rotates the drive member to dispense sheets from the supply. The drive member is movable between an operative position adjacent the feeder support and a disengaged position spaced from the feeder support. The drive member in the operative position is biased towards the supply support.
