Embodiment Construction

[0012] refer to figure 1 , shows a power system 10 comprising a direct injection compression ignition internal combustion engine 12 coupled to a generator 14 configured to supply electrical power to an electrical grid 20 according to one embodiment. Power system 10 may be one of a number of engines and generator sets configured, for example, to provide standby or standard operating power for server farms, industrial or mining sites, or various other applications, however, the invention is not so limited. Direct-injection, compression-ignition internal combustion engine 12 (hereinafter “engine 12 ”) may include or be coupled to a drive shaft 18 configured to rotate an input shaft 16 of an electrical generator 14 . Engine 12 includes an engine housing 22 with cylinders 24 formed therein. Cylinder 24 may be one of a plurality of substantially identical cylinders arranged in a V-configuration, an in-line configuration, or any other suitable arrangement in engine 12 . A plurality...

Abstract

A direct-injected compression ignition internal combustion engine includes an engine housing having a cylinder and a piston movable within the cylinder and including a piston end face forming a combustion bowl. The piston end face has an annular piston rim with a rounded inner rim surface that extends radially inward and axially downward from a planar outer rim surface to a combustion bowl edge. An antebowl is defined by the rounded inner rim surface and has an antebowl volume that is about 0.8% or greater of a total volume of the combustion bowl and the antebowl together. A configuration anddimensional attributes of the antebowl is associated with reduced smoke production during operation, particularly for low to mid-load transients.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a piston for a compression ignition internal combustion engine, and more particularly to a piston having a combustion bowl and a front bowl configured to reduce smoke production. Background technique [0002] Many different operating strategies and component designs are known in the field of internal combustion engines. Decades of research and development have gone into the ways in which refueling, exhaust gas recirculation or EGR, turbocharging, variable valve actuation, variable geometry turbines, use of wastegates, and many other factors can be varied to produce different results made progress. In addition to varying these and other operating parameters, a great deal of research and performance testing has revolved around different ways to alter the shape and proportions of engine components (especially pistons in recent years) to achieve certain desired results. One driving force behind the development ...
