[0032] The present disclosure describes various embodiments of methods and devices for detecting gingival inflammation using oral care devices. More generally, applicants have recognized and appreciated that it would be beneficial to provide a system for detecting localized tissue inflammation. Accordingly, methods described or otherwise contemplated herein provide a device, such as an oral care device, configured to obtain measurements of gum tissue. The oral care device includes one or more of various sensor arrays having one or more light emitters and at least one light detector to obtain information about gum tissue at one or more sampled locations.
