Problems solved by technology

However, when operating an instrument within the ear canal, the entry path of the instrument often covers or blocks the line of sight between the microscope and the targeted treatment area
As a result, physicians may be limited in the manipulation of the device, or may have to operate without a full view of the target treatment area
Physicians have developed techniques to adjust instrument placement to avoid observational interference, but this can result in suboptimal instrument positioning and increase the time to perform the procedure

Embodiment Construction

[0028] Described herein are systems, devices, and methods for visualizing within an ear of a subject during an otological procedure. In some embodiments, the systems, devices and methods described herein can be used to provide visualization within the ear before, during or after pressure equalization or tympanic tube placement procedures.

[0029] Such as figure 1 As shown schematically in , an exemplary visualization system including a guide device 100 may be positioned in the ear canal EC of a subject and provide a view of a target treatment area, such as the eardrum TM. The guide device 100 may be configured to guide the instrument into the ear canal EC. In an embodiment, the guide device 100 may be shaped and function similarly to a speculum. The guide device 100 includes a body 110 that defines a channel or lumen 120 for receiving an instrument. The channel 120 may terminate in an opening 122 at the distal end of the body 110 within the ear canal EC. An instrument, s...

Abstract

Systems, apparatuses, and methods are described for providing visualization inside an ear of a subject before, during, or after an otologic procedure. An apparatus (100) includes a light source (140),a sensor (130), a processor (152, 170), and a display (154, 172, 972). The light source (140) can be configured to provide incident light to a target area (TM), and the sensor (130) can be configuredto capture reflected light from the target area (TM) to generate image data based on the reflected light. The processor (152, 170) can process the image data to produce an image of the target area (TM), and the display (154, 172, 972) can display the image of the target area (TM).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to pending U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 617,951, filed January 16, 2018, entitled "VISUALIZATION DEVICES AND METHODSFOR OTOLOGIC PROCEDURES," the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to systems, devices, and methods for visualizing a subject's ear during otology or ear procedures. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a visualization device that includes one or more cameras and a light source for visualizing the interior of a subject's ear canal during a tympanostomy tube placement procedure. Background technique [0004] Otological procedures, or ear-related procedures, typically involve inserting a medical device into a subject's ear. For example, otitis media is a common disease of the middle ear associated with inflammation. Otitis media is common in human children d...
