The apparatus (150, 250) comprises: (a) a base device (260);(b) a cavity (265) formed in the base device (260) at a surface of the base device (260); (c) a distribution device (270) movable along the surface such that, when the distribution device (270) is moved, the viscous medium (390) is displaced on the surface such that the viscous medium (390) travels over the cavity (265) and at least a portion of the viscous medium (390) is transferable into the cavity (265); and (d) a sensor (280) for monitoring the amount of viscous medium (390) present on the surface.
