Problems solved by technology

For example, percutaneous placement of bone material can be challenging due to the small incisions made in the patient that do not provide the surgeon with sufficient space to directly access the surgical site
Furthermore, often the location of the surgical site (eg, at the spine) can be a difficult location to implant bone material because the location can be in close proximity to nerves

[0022] definition

[0023] For the purposes of this specification and the appended claims, unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing amounts of ingredients, percentages or ratios of materials, reaction conditions and other numerical values used in the specification and claims are to be understood as is modified in all instances by the term "about". Similarly, when values are expressed as approximations, by use of the antecedent "about," it will be understood that the particular value forms another embodiment of + / - 10% of the stated value. Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the following specification and appended claims are approximations that may vary depending upon the desired properties sought to be obtained by the present disclosure. At the very least, and not as an attempt to limit the application of the doctrine of equivalents to the scope of the claims, each numerical parameter should at least be construed...

Abstract

A device for delivering a bone material to a surgical site is provided. The device comprises a body having an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion of the body is substantially transverse to the upper portion and has an opening for receiving a bone material. An internal chamber is disposed within the upper portion and the lower portion, and a plunger is slidably disposed in at leastthe internal chamber of the body. The plunger has a distal end configured for delivering the bone material out of the lower portion of the body, wherein movement of the plunger in a first position toward the lower portion of the body delivers the bone material from the lower portion of the body to the surgical site. Methods of delivering the bone material are also provided.

Description

Background technique [0001] The use of bone materials (eg, bone grafts, demineralized bone matrix, bone substitute materials, etc.) in orthopedic medicine is known. While bone trauma may regenerate without the formation of scar tissue, fractures and other orthopedic injuries take longer to heal, during which time the bone is not able to support physiological loads without assistance. Metal pins, screws, rods, plates and meshes are often required to replace the mechanical function of injured bone. However, metal is significantly harder than bone. The use of metal implants may reduce bone density around the implant site due to stress shielding. Physiological stress and corrosion can cause metal implants to fracture. Unlike bone, which can crack and heal small injuries by remodeling to prevent larger damage and fractures, only damaged metal implants can be replaced or removed. The body's natural cellular healing and remodeling mechanisms coordinate the removal of bone and bon...
