Embodiment Construction

[0020] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the retractor includes two independent mechanisms to transmit or absorb torque. For low acceleration events, torque is absorbed to inhibit webbing extraction to mitigate occupant motion for increased safety. Webbing extraction is inhibited by locking the rotation of the spool in the extraction direction by loading at least one coupler pawl between the spool and the locking mechanism. The locking mechanism includes a locking base and a locking pawl having teeth that engage teeth of the locking ring to prevent rotation of the locking mechanism.

[0021] For high acceleration events, the pretensioner generates torque to retract the webbing of the seat belt system to eliminate the gap between the seat belt and the occupant, thereby mitigating occupant movement for increased safety. The pretensioner may be pivotally coupled to the pinion and thereby rotate the pinion (in the webbing retraction direction), and the pinion...

Abstract

The invention discloses a seatbelt retractor for a seat belt device in a vehicle. The retractor includes a frame and a spool configured to be fixed to one end of a seat belt webbing so that the webbing may be wound around the spool. The spool is rotatably mounted at both ends to the frame and configured to rotate in a webbing extraction direction and a webbing retraction direction. The retractor includes primary and secondary torsion bars positioned end to end in the spool along an axis of rotation of the spool. The primary and secondary torsion bars are configured to be locked at second endsof the torsion bars opposite to the first end. The first ends of the torsion bars are configured to rotate relative to the second ends so that the primary and secondary torsion bars deform to absorb force when a vehicle acceleration exceeds a predetermined value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of seat belt retractors for wrapping a seat belt (webbing) for restraining an occupant of a seating system of a vehicle or the like. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to retractors with energy absorbing systems. Background technique [0002] Certain aspects of the retractor disclosed herein are similar to the retractor disclosed in US Patent No. 7,946,519 (incorporated herein by reference), which discloses the use of a single torsion bar for energy absorption. As further described herein, the retractors described and illustrated in the drawings of this application provide two torsion bars that provide parallel load paths for energy absorption and the ability to pass Remove one of the torsion bars to selectively vary the amount of energy absorbed. The devices disclosed herein can be configured within the same basic retractor frame device as disclosed in the aforementioned patents, t...
