Embodiment Construction

[0029] The present disclosure describes various embodiments of methods for manufacturing a brush head assembly having bristle tufts held within a matrix of flexible material such that the brush head assembly is oil-resistant or oil-resistant. More generally, Applicants have recognized and appreciated that it would be beneficial to provide a brush head formed from a flexible substrate which may facilitate the function of the brush head, particularly in electric toothbrush devices. A particular purpose of utilizing certain embodiments of the present disclosure is to be able to efficiently manufacture a brush head with improved retention of bristle tufts and other components while providing good scrubbing performance.

[0030] In view of the foregoing, various embodiments and implementations relate to a method wherein the bristle tufts are secured to or within a retaining element, or directly to the brush head neck, and the bristle tufts are then embedded in a matrix of flexible m...

Abstract

A method for manufacturing a brush head includes the steps of providing a plurality of bristle tuft retention elements, and inserting at least one bristle tuft into each of the bristle tuft retentionelements. The proximal end of each bristle tuft is secured into each bristle tuft retention element. The platen portion of the brush neck is positioned in relation to the proximal ends of the bristletufts in the retaining elements to define a space in relation to the proximal ends of the bristle tufts. A flexible material is injected into the space to create a flexible material matrix that at least partially encompasses the neck and the proximal ends of the bristle tufts. At least a portion of an exterior of the flexible material matrix is coated with a protective coating.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 626,863, filed February 6, 2018, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to methods for manufacturing a brush head assembly with a protective coating or barrier applied externally around a flexible material matrix holding bristle tufts. Background technique [0004] The heads of both manual and electric toothbrushes include bristles for cleaning the teeth, tongue and cheeks. In some toothbrushes, the bristles are stapled or anchored in the neck portion of the brush head. In other toothbrushes, the bristles are secured to the head without spikes, using a method commonly known as "anchor-free tufting". In some toothbrushes, the bristles are organized into tufts of bristles contained within a retaining or carrier element or otherwise secured to the brush head neck....
