The method comprises the steps that a top dead center self-learning result and a credibility result of a lift signal in an operation process of an engine is obtained, and whether the continuous variable valve lift system needs self-learning or not is judged; if the continuous variable valve lift system needs self-learning, whether the continuous variable valve lift system can conduct self-learning or not is judged; if the continuous variable valve lift system does not need self-learning, the continuous variable valve lift system enters a normal lift control mode, if the continuous variable valve lift system can conduct self-learning, the continuous variable valve lift systemis controlled to conduct self-learning; and if the continuous variable valve lift system can not conduct self-learning, the continuous variable valve lift system is controlled to enter a fault lift control mode. According to the method and the system, the problem that the continuous variable valve lift system is low in lift control precision can be effectively solved.
