[0069] The desired amount of sunflower oil was charged to a 3-liter 4-neck glass reactor equipped with mechanical stirring, reflux condenser, thermocouple and nitrogen blanket. MDEA was added to the reactor in an amount to obtain a molar ratio of 2 fatty acid groups to 1 amine, and potassium carbonate was added to the reaction mixture. The reaction mixture was stirred at 300 rpm and heated to 160°C under nitrogen until the free amine content stabilized between 2 and 3%. The resulting esteramine mixture was then cooled to room temperature. It will be appreciated that the resulting esteramine mixture comprises about 70% by weight esteramine and about 30% by weight glycerides, primarily monoglycerides and diglycerides, which are by-products of the reaction of MDEA and sunflower oil.

Abstract

Esterquat compositions are disclosed that comprise, based on the weight of the composition, 0% to about 70% by weight of a solvent, and about 30% to 100% by weight of a mixture comprising about 50% to about 80% by weight, based on the weight of the mixture, of esterquats and about 20% to about 50% by weight, based on the weight of the mixture, of mono- and diglycerides. The esterquat compositions can be prepared by the direct esterification of a natural oil with an alkanolamine, followed by quaternization in the presence of the solvent. The esterquat compositions can be formulated into hair care compositions that provide improved wet and dry combing properties.
