The japonica rice and indica rice varieties are distinguished according to the content of saturated triglyceride in mature seeds. Specifically, the content of saturated triglyceride in the indica type conventional rice variety IR64 is taken as a reference value, in seeds of a to-be-detected variety, if the content of saturated triglyceride in the to-be-detected variety is higher than the content of saturated triglyceride in the indica type conventional rice variety IR64 by more than 1%, the to-be-detected variety is judged as the indica type rice variety, and if the content of saturated triglyceride in the to-be-detected variety is lower than the content of saturated triglyceride in the indica type conventional rice variety IR64 by less than 1%, the to-be-detected variety is determined as japonica rice variety.
