Abstract

Various embodiments relate to an apparatus for detecting characteristics of fluid particles, comprising: a fluid composition sensor comprising: an illumination source configured to emit a light beam along a light beam axis such that at least a portion of the light beam engages a collection medium and illuminates particles disposed within the collection medium; an imaging device configured to capture an image of particles disposed within the collection medium; and a light shield including an inner shield portion enclosed within an inner surface of the shield wall; and one or more baffle elements disposed within the inner shield portion and configured to reflect at least a diverging portion of the light beam within the inner shield portion; wherein the light shield extends between the illumination source and the imaging device such that a portion of the light beam emitted along the light beam axis passes through the inner shield portion.
