Abstract

A method and apparatus for encoding a stereoscopic video in a patch-based atlas format in intra-frame periods of different lengths are disclosed. A first atlas layout is constructed for a first sequence of 3D scenes. The number of 3D scenes in the sequence is selected to coincide with the size of the GoP of the codec. When the number of patches of the layout constructed for the iterated second sequence is less than or equal to the number of patches of the first layout, the second sequence is iteratively established by encoding the next 3D scene of the additional sequence. At the end of iteration, one of the layouts is selected to generate each atlas of the group. In this manner, the size of the metadata is reduced and the compression is enhanced.
