Abstract

The invention relates to assembly line manufacturing and assembly of aircraft wings. Systems and methods for inspecting a wing panel are provided. Some methods include the steps of advancing a wing plate through a non-destructive inspection (NDI) station; and inspecting the wing plate at the NDI station by using the inspection head. During inspection and / or propulsion, the wing plate may be suspended under the strong back material, such as by using a vacuum coupling of the strong back material and / or a length-adjustable spring member, and the step of suspending may include contouring the wing plate using the vacuum coupling and / or spring member. Other methods include the steps of receiving a wing panel at an NDI station, and inspecting a portion of the wing panel during movement through the NDI station. Some systems include a track, a powerful backing that suspends the wing panel underneath and advances the wing panel along the track, and an NDI station disposed at the track to inspect the wing panel while being suspended.
