The insulation unit 2 comprises an outer first panel 4 and an outer second panel 6 and an inner third panel 8 supported by a perimeter spacer assembly 10 . Plates 4, 6 and 8 may be glass or other materials such as transparent or translucent polymer plates. The combination of the outer panels 4 and 6 and the spacer assembly 10 defines an inner insulating chamber which may be filled with air or an inert gas. Abstract

The spacer supports the first plate and the second plate of the thermal insulation unit, where the spacer further compressively supports the inner third plate between the first plate and the second plate. The spacer defines a channel that receives a peripheral edge of the third plate. When the third plate is inserted into the channel, the spacer deforms on either side of the channel neck. The elasticity of the spacer material causes the spacer material on both sides of the channel neck to compressively engage the third glass sheet. The spacer thus retains the inner spacer without the need to provide an adhesive in the channel. This configuration presses against the panel to close the channel, thereby preventing viewing the inner surface of the channel, which provides a desirable appearance for the interior portion of the insulating glass unit.
