Within network 100, MS 120 communicates with Base Transceiver Substation (BTS) 130 via wireless communications (represented by a lightning line in FIG. 1 and elsewhere). BTS 130 then communicates with a base station controller (BSC) 140 . BSC 140 then routes communications between BTS 130 and Mobile Switching Center (MSC) 150 . Although only one BTS 130 is shown in the figure, in a typical GSM network there may be multiple BTSs connected to a BSC. Likewise, multiple BSCs are typically attached to one MSC 150. The MSC 150 is then connected to a standard GSM-based network backbone which forwards the call from the MS 120 to the destination device over the destination network 160 (which may be PSTN, IP or a mobile phone network).
