The invention discloses an online cable insulation detection system and method, and the system comprises a grounding knife switch which is connected with a high-voltage cable, a grounding contactor which is connected with the grounding knife switch and is grounded, an insulation detection device, a relay protector, and a power monitoring system platform. The insulation detection device comprises a power supply module, a high-voltage module, a measurement control module, a high-voltage output relay and a communication module. The relay protector is in communication connection with the communication module; the power monitoring system platform is built on the cloud server and is connected with the relay protector through a communication network. The device has the advantages that during maintenance of an underground power supply line of a coal mine, a maintainer can detect the insulation resistance of a power supply cable by operating an infrared remote controller or a front door button of an explosion-proof switch, so that the working efficiency is improved; a self-checking technology is adopted, so that the accuracy of a detection result is ensured; the safety risk is avoided through the automatic testing process; and test data is automatically uploaded to the power monitoring system, so that data management is facilitated.
