A sending system 10 transmits packet data to a receiving system 20 via a network 15 . Network 15 includes a packet-switched network, such as the Internet, which uses a sliding window transmission protocol (eg, TCP) that uses returned acknowledgments as an indication that a packet has left the network in order to preserve the number of outstanding packets within the network. The bandwidth of the forward path 25 will be wider than the bandwidth of the reverse path 30, so the system includes an asymmetric network. Transmissions from the sending system 10 to the receiving system 20 take place via the forward path 25 , while acknowledgment transmissions for data packets received from the receiving system 10 are sent via the reverse path 30 .
