Embodiment Construction

[0014] Describe in detail with reference to accompanying drawing, at first is figure 1 and 2 , the invention is embodied by a shielded electrical connector, generally designated 10 , mounted on a printed circuit board 12 . The connector is at least partially mounted on the breakout portion 14 of the circuit board. A connector consists of two basic parts, an insulating housing, usually designated 16, and a metal shield, usually designated 18, along with a number of electrical terminals mounted on the housing.

[0015] More significantly, the collaborative reference figure 1 , figure 2 and Figure 4 , the insulating housing 16 of the connector 10 is a one-piece structure integrally molded from plastic or similar material. The housing includes a top wall 20 ( Figure 4 ), a bottom wall 22 having an opening 24, a rear wall 26 and a pair of opposing side walls 28. The housing has a front mating face 30 . The top wall 20, the bottom wall 22, the rear wall 26 and the side wa...

Abstract

A shielded electrical connector is provided for mounting at least partially on a disconnected portion of a printed circuit board. The connector includes an insulating housing having an opening conforming to a disconnected portion of the printed circuit board and through its bottom wall. The housing has a plug insertion cavity with an opening in the front mating surface of the housing to accommodate a complementary mating plug connector. A latch projection extends from the housing near the bottom wall of the housing. The metal shield is mounted on the housing and has a front tab portion juxtaposed with the front mating surface of the housing, the front tab portion having a plug insertion opening in line with the front opening of the housing. The shield also includes a bottom tab portion aligned with the opening in the bottom wall of the housing, the bottom tab portion including a latch hole for containing a latch projection of the housing.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to the art of electrical connectors, and in particular, to a shielded electrical connector for mounting on a breakout portion of a printed circuit board. Background technique [0002] Typically, shielded electrical connectors include some form of insulating housing to which a plurality of electrically conductive terminals are mounted. For example, the housing may be molded from a plastic material. To protect the circuitry on the board to which the connector is connected from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and / or radio frequency interference (RFI), the connector housing may be surrounded by a metal shield or housing. For example, the shield may be extruded from a conductive sheet metal material. When the connector is mounted on a printed circuit board, the outer shield is usually grounded to a suitable ground circuit path on the circuit board. A typical shielded electrical connector of this type is a modular jack ...
