The stopper rod (1) comprises a refractory body with an upper end (2), a lower end (3) and an axial hole (4) with a restriction in its lower region. An inert gas such as argon may be supplied from a gas source through an axial hole in the upper region of the stopper rod. Mounting means (5) for mounting the stopper rod on a lifting mechanism (not shown) are arranged in the first part A of the stopper rod at a distance d from the upper end (2) in the axial hole (4).
