[0007] The invention relates to a method for improving the recovery rate of carbon dioxide in a furnace of a sulfuric acid plant. The method includes injecting oxygen into the furnace described above. It has now been found that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the flue gas can be increased by increasing the oxygen content above the air normally fed to the sulfuric acid plant and by reducing the nitrogen content in the feed gas. The method also keeps the temperature of the catalyst from exceeding a temperature which would damage the catalyst and affect the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide. Generally, such temperatures are below 2100°F. However, if the refractory material of the reformer is improved to withstand higher temperatures, the above-mentioned temperature can exceed 2100F. The oxygen-enriched stream passed to the sulfuric acid plant furnace should contain at least 60% oxygen by volume. This oxygen-enriched stream may be obtained from any conventi...
