Embodiment Construction

[0046] The broadcasting system described in the method and apparatus of the present invention is a satellite broadcasting system. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that other broadcast systems capable of receiving and displaying many stations may use the method and apparatus of the present invention. Furthermore, in the following description, for the convenience of explanation, a large number of detailed menus, flow charts and system configuration diagrams are given to facilitate an accurate understanding of the present invention. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that none of these specific details or details are necessary to practice the present invention. In other embodiments, well-known electrical structures and circuits are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring the present invention.

Abstract

An innovative but easy to use on-line guide is provided to provide the user of a multiple channel television broadcast system a wealth of programming information in a simple format that is easy to understand. The guide enables the user to easily select a particular program to watch. In particular, when the guide is presented to the user, the guide covers only a portion of the actual television screen or display. The remaining portion of the television screen continues to broadcast the audio and video of the currently selected program. As a user scans through the guide and moves the pointer from one station to another, the system responds by automatically tuning to the channel pointed to by the pointer and provides the audio and displays the video in the portion of the screen not covered by the guide.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a display device and display method for channels, programs and broadcast information of a multi-channel television system. Background technique [0002] Television broadcasting technology has greatly improved since its inception. Today, television signals are broadcast in the form of radio waves via cable and via satellite. Now, the number of stations that can be received has grown from one to hundreds. In order to select a program to watch, many viewers can only "channel search" until they find a channel for the program they want to watch. "Channel search" refers to the process of continuously viewing each channel using the channel "+" or "-" key. While some viewers find it interesting to "channel search" among hundreds of stations, most viewers prefer a more direct method of selecting programs to watch. [0003] Some systems, such as the RCA satellite broadcast system TM or DSS TM (Direct Satellite System and DS...
