Abstract

The present invention is a system (110) and method for responding to communication messages with a recorded response. The data network system includes a messaging server (112) and a messaging agent (120). The target device (one of 102-108) configures the system with one or more recorded responses. The messaging agent then receives the communication message from an originating device (another of 102-108) and searches (206, 306, 406) the target device's configuration data. Next, the messaging agent determines (208, 308, 408) whether the target device is available to communicate with the originating device based on the configuration data. If so, the system routes (210, 310, 410) the communication message to the target device. Otherwise, the system blocks (230, 330, 340) the communication message to the target device and sends (230, 330, 340) a recorded reply to the originating device.
