Problems solved by technology

A disadvantage of this approach is that the connection between the mobile station and its supporting network is actually managed on the peripheral device, so that the mobile station cannot conveniently use the connection for purposes other than carrying traffic and messages for the peripheral device anything
Therefore, connections via mobile stations are more difficult since such connections may be somewhat inconsistent with the peripheral's nominal IP connection operation

Embodiment Construction

[0014] 1 illustrates a wireless communication network 10 and a mobile station 12 providing conventional connectivity support between one or more terminal units (TE) 14, otherwise referred to herein as public data networks (PDN) 16, such as the Internet. for "peripherals". With such a configuration, TE 14 is communicatively coupled via local connection 18 to mobile station 12 , which is communicatively coupled to network 10 via wireless link 20 . Thus, TE 14 communicates with PDN 16 using mobile station 12 and supporting wireless network 10 .

[0015] Those of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that the general description and drawings given above are simplified, however, such a simplified presentation is still a sufficient basis from which to discuss conventional methods of supporting peripheral device connections from a mobile station. In other words, in the context of FIG. 1 , link 20 between mobile station 12 and network 10 represents one or more channels used by net...

Abstract

A mobile station serves as an aggregation point for connecting one or more peripheral devices to a Public Data Network through the mobile station's wireless link to a supporting wireless communication network. In an exemplary embodiment, the mobile station establishes a single PPP session with the network that includes a primary service instance for itself and an auxiliary service instance for each locally attached peripheral device. As such, the mobile station and the one or more locally attached peripheral devices share a single PPP session, permitting each device to have its own IP address and allowing the mobile station to provide Mobile IP messaging relay between Mobile IP clients in the attached devices and the supporting network. With this arrangement, the mobile station avoids IP packet routing overhead by directing traffic to the appropriate peripheral device using the service instance identifiers marking the packet data traffic received from the network.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to mobile station based Internet services, and more particularly to aggregating such services for one or more peripheral devices via a mobile station. [0002] Mobile stations, such as cellular radiotelephone handsets, provide access to an increasing variety of data services primarily through the evolution of packet data networks that support such handsets. Due to increasing data rates and the move towards integrated packet data services, such as all-IP wireless networks, mobile stations increasingly represent "gateway" devices throughout the Internet, and to other public data networks (PDNs) and / or private data networks relatively high bandwidth access. [0003] Thus, the mobile station provides at least the possibility for aggregating multiple connections between the Internet (or other external network) and various other devices, here for example laptops, portable digital assistants (PDAs) etc. Suc...
