Embodiment Construction

[0035] In general, the economic allocation process operates as described herein to distribute the load demand of the power system among the various available generation resources. One example of such an economic allocation procedure distributes the load demand of the power plant to the individual generators, where the load demand specifies the total amount of active power demand and the total amount of reactive power demand from the power plant. The economic allocation program can exploit various performance constraints associated with the generators, including one or more generators' reactive capability curves, which provide the power factor of the generators, the real power produced by the generators, and the The relationship between reactive power generated. An alternative example of an economic allocation procedure distributes the load demand of the grid to individual power plants, where the load demand specifies the active power demand as well as the reactive power demand...

Abstract

A system for generating updated reactive capability curves of a generator operates the generator at a number of operating load levels and at a number of different power factors to collect data regarding the real and reactive power generated at each of the various operating load levels and power factors. Subsequently, the system analyzes the collected data to determine an actual reactive capability curve of the generator. The system also provides generator health monitoring and identifies changes and trends in the capability curves of the generator. The updated reactive capability curves may be used by an economic dispatch program in determining optimum MW and MVAR setpoints for the generator.

Description

technical field [0001] This application relates generally to computer software, and more particularly to computer software for use in power generation and distribution systems. Background technique [0002] In the 21st century, electricity is used in every aspect of life. However, most users of electrical energy are unaware that electricity traverses a complex network of generation and distribution systems before reaching their homes. For example, the power outage that occurred in almost the entire northeastern United States and Canada on August 14 and 15, 2003, has repeatedly illustrated the complexity of power generation and distribution, and made people clearly understand the various processes of power generation and distribution And systems require very careful planning. [0003] In the United States, electricity generation and distribution are traditionally highly regulated by federal government agencies such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well...
