Embodiment Construction

[0022] In the preferred embodiment of the invention described in detail below, a method of combining the active operation of a respirator and a nebulizer is provided. It should be understood that the drawings and description are to be considered as examples of the principles of the invention. For example, while referring to Engstrom Carestation which has strong nursing therapeutic applications  (An Intensive Care Respiratory System Product) illustrates the concept of the invention, but the invention is also applicable in many other patient care settings, such as anesthesia units or emergency room settings. For example, a respirator designed to deliver heliox as the breathing gas combined with an integrated nebulizer system, in an emergency room setting, could be used in the treatment of patients with asthma.

[0023] refer to figure 1 , shows a typical structure of a ventilation system that provides a flow of ventilation gas to a patient.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of combining the operation of a respirator and a nebulizer for respiratory therapy. In one example, the method includes the steps of: (1) providing a control unit in communication with the respirator and the nebulizer, and configuring the control unit to respond to one or more ventilation control parameters associated with respiratory therapy obtaining a control value; (2) operating the ventilator to provide respiratory therapy to a patient; and (3) generating a modification signal from the control unit to automatically change operating conditions of the nebulizer based on the control value. In another example, the method includes the steps of: (1) providing a control unit in communication with the respirator and nebulizer; (2) operating the respirator and nebulizer to provide respiratory therapy to the patient, at a predetermined delivery periodically operating the nebulizer; and (3) generating a modification signal from the control unit to automatically change operating conditions of the respirator based on operation of the nebulizer.

Description

[0001] Cross reference to related applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of Provisional Application No. 60 / 582,941, filed June 25, 2004. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a method of providing ventilator therapy to a patient. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method of integrating the control of a respirator with a nebulizer to provide improved nebulized therapy. The present invention also relates to a method of integrating respirator control with nebulizer and respiratory monitoring equipment to provide improved nebulized therapy. Background technique [0004] Clinicians typically use nebulizers to provide aerosolized drug delivery to patients connected to ventilators. The nebulizer is typically placed in the inspiratory column of the patient circuit and is used to inject the aerosolized medication directly into the patient's breathing gas stream. Current state of the art nebulizers are typically aerodynamic ...
