Embodiment Construction

[0038]The present invention refers to a syringe assembly with a passive disabling mechanism. The deactivation mechanism enables variable dosing of the syringe assembly, allowing the plunger rod to undergo a selected number of cycles or strokes before automatically deactivating. In a preferred embodiment, the deactivation mechanism provides for two aspiration and two dispense cycles before automatic deactivation. The assembly is capable of drawing and dispensing a selected volume of diluent into a vial to reconstitute a drug, medicament, or other substance, and then withdrawing the reconstituted substance back into the syringe. A selected volume of reconstituted substance can be injected or delivered to the patient, wherein the volume of substance delivered may be the same or different than the volume of substance drawn into the syringe barrel. The syringe is automatically deactivated after the injection or delivery stroke by retracting the plunger rod thereby activating the d...

Abstract

A syringe assembly having passive disabling structure includes a barrel (102) and a plunger rod (108) assembly. The plunger rod assembly includes a plunger rod and a stopper (128) connected by an indexing locking element (130). The number of strokes of the syringe plunger before the stopper is locked into the barrel rendering the syringe assembly unusable is determined by the number of detents on the plunger rod and stopper which engage the locking mechanism. Upon completion of the final delivery stroke, any attempt to withdraw the plunger rod from the barrel will cause the locking element to engage the barrel and trap the stopper in the barrel preventing further use of the syringe.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to syringe assemblies, and more particularly to syringe assemblies having an automatic disabling mechanism. Background technique [0002] Worldwide, the multiple use of hypodermic syringe products intended to be used only once is an instrumental issue in drug abuse and the spread of infectious disease. Shared intravenous drug users and reused syringes are high-risk groups for the AIDS virus. Moreover, the consequences of multiple use have received widespread attention in countries where the repeated use of syringe products in mass immunization programs is responsible for the spread of many diseases. Reuse of disposable hypodermic syringe components, even in the absence of infection or disease, is an instrumental problem in drug abuse transmission. [0003] To remedy this problem, many attempts have been made. Much of the attention early on was focused on specific actions to destroy syringes after use, ie by using destru...
