The deactivation mechanism enables variable dosing of the syringe assembly, allowing the plunger rod to undergo a selected number of cycles or strokes before automatically deactivating. In a preferred embodiment, the deactivation mechanism provides for two aspiration and two dispense cycles before automatic deactivation. The assembly is capable of drawing and dispensing a selected volume of diluent into a vial to reconstitute a drug, medicament, or other substance, and then withdrawing the reconstituted substance back into the syringe. A selected volume of reconstituted substance can be injected or delivered to the patient, wherein the volume of substance delivered may be the same or different than the volume of substance drawn into the syringe barrel.
