Embodiment Construction

[0024] For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will now be made to the embodiments or examples illustrated in the drawings and specific language will be used to describe the same. However, it will be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto. Any alterations and further modifications in the described embodiments and any further application of the principles of the invention described herein are to be considered as would normally occur to a person skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.

[0025] The present invention provides an improved intervertebral disc replacement device for replacing an intervertebral disc in an animal body. In one embodiment, the present invention utilizes a simple yet elegant F-ball, improving its structure by providing a bearing surface relative to the vertebral endplates. In various places in the embodiments described below, a single bearing surface is sh...

Abstract

A disc replacement device is provided for replacing a spinal disc in an animal subject. The disc replacement device includes a shell, a fulcrum, and a damping sleeve. The shell further comprises a first portion adapted for articulating with the fulcrum such as a spherical stainless steel ball, and a second portion adapted for coupling with the damping sleeve.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to artificial replacement devices, and more particularly to artificial intervertebral disc replacement devices. Background technique [0002] Intervertebral discs lie between the concave articular surfaces of adjacent vertebral endplates. They form an important, unique articulation system in the spine, allowing movement in multiple planes. In general, they allow for movements such as bending, extension, side bending, and rotation. [0003] However, as we age, discs often suffer anatomical changes, such as disc degeneration. The most notable changes in the intervertebral disc include: decreased water content and proteoglycan content of the nucleus pulposus; decreased water content and proteoglycan content of the annulus, but not the amount of the nucleus; collagen fibers of the annulus become distorted ; due in part to twisting of the collagen fibers, cracks develop in the laminae, one or more cracks may res...
