Embodiment Construction

[0035] refer to figure 1 , describing the multilevel properties of the railway system 50. As shown, the system comprises from highest level to lowest level: railway infrastructure level 100 , track network level 200 , train level 300 , consist level 400 and locomotive level 500 . Each level has its own operating characteristics, constraints, key operating parameters, and optimization logic, as described below. Furthermore, each level interacts with related levels in a unique manner, and each interface between the levels exchanges different data so that the levels can cooperate to optimize the entire rail system 50 . The method for optimizing the railway system 50 is the same whether one thinks upwards from the locomotive level 500 or downwards from the railway infrastructure system 100 . For ease of understanding, a top-down perspective view will be presented.

Abstract

A multi-level system for managing a railroad system (50) and its operational components, wherein the railroad system (50) has a first level configured to optimize the first level operational parameters including defining operational characteristics and the first level Operations within the first level of data, and the second level, are configured to optimize operations within the second level of data including second level operational parameters that define operational characteristics and the second level of data. The first stage provides first stage operating parameters to the second stage, and the second stage provides second stage operating parameters to the first stage for optimizing operations within the first stage and optimizing operations within the second stage are the functions of the optimization parameters of the optimization system, respectively. Levels can include railway infrastructure level (100), track network level (200), train level (300), composition level (400) and locomotive level (500).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optimizing railroad operations, and more particularly to systems and methods for optimizing railroad operations using a multi-level system-wide approach. Background technique [0002] Railways are complex systems where each component is interdependent with other components within the system. Attempts have been made in the past to optimize the operation of a particular component or group of components of a railway system, such as locomotives, for a particular operating characteristic, such as fuel consumption, which is a major component of the cost of operating a railway system. Some estimates suggest that fuel consumption is the second largest operating cost of rail operating systems, after labor costs. [0003] For example, US Patent No. 6,144,901 proposes optimizing various operational parameters of train operations, including fuel consumption. However, optimizing the performance of a particular train, which is only...
