Problems solved by technology

[0005] While this traditional jam technique is effective at detecting a jam, there is a significant time delay between when a jam occurs and when it is detected
Therefore, the printer will continue to print during this time delay, which results in a waste of printer consumables

Embodiment Construction

[0018] Referring to FIG. 1 , an image forming apparatus 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention is described. Image forming apparatus 100 is shown and described herein as a computer printer. However, the image forming apparatus 100 may be any type of image forming apparatus, such as a copier, a facsimile, a ticket printer, or a receipt printer. Image forming device 100 may print text, graphics, pictures, and / or other images on multiple sheets of media, such as paper, fabric, plastic, or any other media on which images may be printed, using inkjet or laser jet technology. Image forming apparatus 100 includes a media feed failure detection system 102 that detects media feed failures, such as paper jams, by monitoring changes in the position of a sheet of media as it travels along a media feed path within image forming apparatus 100 . As will be described in more detail below, monitoring of a change in position of a sheet of media is accomplished using one or mor...

Abstract

A system and method for optically detecting media feeding malfunctions in an image forming apparatus captures images of a surface of a sheet of media as image signals to detect positional changes of the sheet of media. The detected positional changes are used to determine that a media feeding malfunction has occurred when the positional changes satisfy a predefined condition.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optical detection, and more particularly, to systems and methods for optical detection of media feed failures in image forming devices. Background technique [0002] Computer printers, as well as other image forming devices such as copiers, need to transfer one or more successive sheets of paper from a paper tray to a print cartridge, such as an inkjet or laser toner cartridge, during a printing operation. Transport of the paper is performed by the printer's feed mechanism, which includes a plurality of rollers for driving the paper along the paper feed path from the paper tray to the print cartridge. Due to the mechanical nature of the paper transport operation, all printers are susceptible to occasional paper feed failures, known as paper jams, during printing operations. [0003] When a paper jam occurs, the printer continues to operate until a paper jam is detected. Therefore, the printer will continue to dispense...
