Problems solved by technology

Transmission power spikes can cause various adverse effects
For example, a transmit power spike in an upward direction (i.e., an "up" transmit power spike) can cause excessive interference to other wireless devices and reduce uplink capacity
A transmit power spike in the downward direction (i.e., a "down" transmit power spike) can degrade the performance of the affected wireless device and possibly result in dropped calls
There may also be a pulsating or cascading effect - an upward transmit power spike in one wireless device can cause interference and spikes in other wireless devices

[0019] figure 1 A wireless communication system 100 is shown. For brevity, in figure 1 Only three base stations 110a, 110b, and 110c and one wireless device 120 are shown in FIG. A base station is a fixed station that communicates with wireless devices and may also be called a Node B, base transceiver subsystem (BTS), access point, or some other terminology. A system controller 130 is coupled to base station 110 and may be further coupled to other network entities. The system controller 130 provides coordination and control for the base stations coupled thereto, and further controls the delivery of data to the wireless devices served by these base stations. System controller 130 may also be called a Radio Network Controller (RNC), Base Station Controller (BSC), Mobile Switching Center (MSC) or some other terminology.

[0020] A wireless device may be either fixed or mobile, and may also be called User Equipment (UE), mobile station, terminal, or some other terminology. ...

Abstract

This disclosure discloses techniques for mitigating spikes in transmit power by reducing their magnitude and / or duration. First, power control is performed in a normal manner according to a transmit power control (TPC) scheme. If a (eg upward) transmit power spike is detected, power control is implemented in a manner that mitigates the adverse effects of the spike and according to another TPC scheme. For example, an upward transmit power spike may be detected if a predetermined number of consecutive TPC commands for increasing transmit power are obtained in the upward direction. Upward transmit power spikes may be mitigated by limiting transmit power, reducing the rate at which transmit power adjustments are made in the upward direction, delaying and / or filtering TPC decisions for transmit power adjustments, preventing upward adjustment of transmit power, and the like. Multiple states can be defined and used to implement power control with mitigated spikes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communications, and more particularly to techniques for controlling transmit power used for a data transmission in a wireless communications system. Background technique [0002] In a wireless communication system, a wireless device, such as a cellular telephone, communicates with one or more base stations through transmissions on the downlink and uplink. The downlink (or forward link) refers to the communication link from the base station to the wireless device, and the uplink (or reverse link) refers to the communication link from the wireless device to the base station. In a Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) system, the downlink and uplink are allocated to different frequency bands. [0003] In a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system, which is a type of FDD system, a base station can receive uplink transmissions from multiple wireless devices simultaneously. Since these uplink transmissions are on a ...
