[0023]According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a shared resource may be shared across logical partitions or physical systems in a manner that allows a client to have control over the shared resource. A communications tunnel is built between the client and the resource server. Messages are defined in the communication protocol for the tunnel that allow establishing an outgoing connection from the client through the shared resource. In addition, user-defined extensions for the communication protocol are provided that allow establishing an incoming connection received from the shared resource to the client. Once a connection is made, the client and ultimate destination communicate through the shared resource via point-to-point communication.
