Spatial decimation stimulation in an implantable neural stimulator, such as a cochlear implant

A cochlear implant system, or other neural stimulation system, has the capability to stimulate fast enough to induce stochastic neural firing so as to restore “spontaneous” neural activity. The stimulation rate applied to the more distally-located electrodes of an electrode array connected to the implant system is reduced from the stimulation rate applied to the more proximally-located electrodes. Thus, in the case of a cochlear implant system, the apically-located regions within the cochlea are stimulated at a reduced rate in order to conserve power. Pulse widths of the reduced-rate pulses may further be increased, and amplitudes reduced, to further conserve power. As needed, a low-level random conditioner stimulation signal may be applied to the apical regions of the cochlea in order to ensure the occurrence of random neural firings.

System for controling and calibrating single photon detection devices

ActiveUS20110127415A1Minimizing measurement timeOptimal measurementMaterial analysis by optical meansCalibration apparatusElectricityDark count rate
A single photon detection system and method are disclosed which have a control block for helping to monitor and optimize performance, especially at high detection rates. The system is based on photon detectors constructed with avalanche photodiodes (APD) gated in time to operate in the Geiger mode. An electrical reference frequency is generated which is subtracted from the APD output in order to better isolate the breakdown event. The resulting signal is sampled and analyzed to allow the control unit to optimize the magnitude and phase of the electrical reference frequency. The control unit may also change the gate pulse shape and phase, including by the use of a digital-to-analog converter. The gate pulse can be shifted off an input optical pulse so as to estimate dark count rate, or shifted to measure a reference input signal to estimate detection efficiency.

A throttle body fuel injection system and method that is arranged to easily replace four-barrel carburetors includes a throttle body assembly with four main bores, each with a throttle plate and an associated fuel injector. Each injector feeds fuel into a circular fuel distribution ring via a fuel injection conduit, which introduces pressurized fuel into the air stream. The fuel distribution rings and bores have profiles that avoid constrictions for to prevent low pressure zones according to the Venturi effect. Fuel is injected through downward-facing outlets at or near the bottom end of the rings. The fuel injection rings are two-piece, each formed of an insert pressed into an outer housing. The insert includes axial grooves intervaled about its exterior circumference of insert that are joined by a circumferential groove formed about the insert. The grooves are in fluid communication with a conduit that supplies fuel from a fuel injector.

Method for producing hologram by pico-second laser

Disclosed is a method of producing a hologram through a two-beam laser interfering exposure process, which comprises emitting a coherent laser light with a pulse width (τ) ranging from greater than 900 femtoseconds to 100 picoseconds and a laser power of 10 μJ / pulse or more using a solid-state laser as a light source, dividing the pulses light from the laser into two beams, controlling the two beams temporally and spatially in such a manner that the two beam are converged on a surface of or inside a workpiece for recording a hologram while matching the respective converged spots of the two beams with one another temporally and spatially to create the interference therebetween so as to record a surface-relief hologram on the surface of the workpiece or an embedded hologram inside the workpiece in an irreversible manner. The present invention can solve a problem with a conventional process of recording a hologram in a non-photosensitive material in an irreversible manner using interfering femtosecond laser pulses, specifically, distortion in the waveforms of pulsed laser beams and resulting instability in recording of an embedded hologram due to a non-linear optical interaction between the femtosecond laser pulses and air / the material.

A single point fuel injection throttle body assembly including an idle air control circuit having an port opening into main intake bores downstream of the point of fuel distribution into the air stream. When the idle air control circuit is open, an air / fuel mixture, rather than simply air, is drawn into the into the intake manifold, thereby reducing the tendency for a lean fuel mixture at idle. A unique engine control unitfeed forwardalgorithm controls the fuel injection as a function of the position of the idle air control motor so that as the idle air control circuit is opened, the pulse widths of the fuel injector signals are increased. This feature allows the initial open-loop-based fuel mixture supplied by system to be more accurate and eliminates rough unstable idle associated with closed-loop control lag times.

A workpiece processing system employs a common modular imaged optics assembly and an optional variable beam expander for optically processing multiple laser beams. In one embodiment, a laser and a fixed beam expander cooperate to produce a laser beam that propagates through a beam switching device to produce multiple laser beams that propagate along separate propagation path portions and subsequently merge into a common path portion through an imaged optics assembly and optional variable expander. The beam expander sets the shape of the laser beams in the form of a Gaussian spatial distribution of light energy. The imaged optics assembly shapes the Gaussian spatial distribution of the laser beams to form output beams of uniform spatial distribution. In an alternative embodiment, the beam switching device is removed and the laser beams propagate from separate laser sources associated with separate optional beam expanders.

Laser beam machining method and laser beam machining apparatus

In a laser beam machining method and a laser beam machining apparatus, a higher improvement in machining ability is required for grooving and cutting of a semiconducting material or a ceramic material. In order to meet this requirement, the invention provides a laser beam machining apparatus and a laser beam machining method in which an ultraviolet laser beam is irradiated in pulses onto a workpiece made of an inorganic material to groove or cut the workpiece. In this laser beam machining apparatus and laser beam machining method, as the scanning speed of the ultraviolet laser beam is higher, or as the machining depth of the grooving or the cutting is greater, the pulse width of the ultraviolet laser beam is set to be greater. This can significantly improve the machining ability compared with a case where the average power is increased.

Programmable Local Clock Buffer

A programmable clock generator circuit receives control signals and a global clock and generates a pulsed data clock and a scan clock in response to gating signals. The clock generator has data clock and scan clock feed-forward paths and a single feedback path. Delay control signals program delay elements in the feedback path and logic gates reshape and generate a feedback clock signal. The global clock and the feedback clock signal are combined to generates a pulsed local clock signal. A scan clock feed-forward circuit receives the local clock and generates the scan clock. A data clock feed-forward circuit receives the local clock and generates the data clock with a logic controlled delay relative to the local clock signal. The feedback clock is generated with controlled delay thereby modifying the pulse width of the data and scan clocks independent of the controlled delay of the data clock feed-forward path.
