Embodiment Construction

[0012] Throughout the following detailed description, various specific details are set forth in order to provide a fuller understanding of the present invention. However, the invention may be practiced without these details. In other instances, well known elements have not been shown and described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the invention. Accordingly, the specification and drawings are to be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.

[0013] The present invention relates to consumables management systems in which consumables usage is monitored directly by a pre-printed CTP system and then uploaded or otherwise communicated to a remote central MIS system. A central MIS system can be provided by a media supplier and can monitor inventory from many such users. The term "computer-to-plate" is often used to describe imaging systems and associated control hardware that are capable of not only exposing printing plates directly, but also imaging other media t...

Abstract

In a system for monitoring the usage of consumable items in a computer to plate imaging line, usage data is transferred to a remote management information system (MIS), which may be run by a media vendor or other service company. The remote MIS monitors the consumable inventory fora plant against pre-determined order points. An order is initiated if the inventory falls below thepre-determined order point.

Description

[0001] Related application reference [0002] This application claims traditional priority to Canadian Patent Application No. 2411487, filed November 12,2002. technical field [0003] The invention relates to the field of consumable items management for printing plants. Background technique [0004] Computer-to-plate (CTP) systems are increasingly used in the preparation of various plates, films, and other media for printing operations. This ability to manufacture printing plates directly and very quickly allows printing plants to streamline operations and enjoy the benefits of increased automation and control. A wide variety of plate types and sizes and various media such as coated media or film may be used frequently. The associated media inventory that must be maintained represents a considerable investment. Managing inventory levels to have the correct type and size of media on hand without requiring excessive inventory is a challenge for print operations. [0005] W...
