Embodiment Construction

[0014] Several preferred embodiments of the invention are described below by means of synchronization according to the SyncML standard, in which user data items are typically synchronized. However, the invention is applicable to systems using any synchronization technique. SyncML device management based in part on the SyncML standard has similar issues as role selection in SyncML data synchronization, which can be solved according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention. One device then usually acts as the master and replicates its settings to the other devices, which means that the key is that the role remains the same from one device management session to another.

[0015] Figure 1 illustrates a network system in which the data in their databases can be synchronized between a server S and a terminal TE, between terminals TE or between servers S. A synchronized database should be broadly understood to refer to any storage device such as a memory card, hard disk...

Abstract

The invention relates to arranging a synchronization device between a first synchronization device and a second synchronization device. A first synchronization session is set up between the first synchronization device and the second synchronization device. Role information is defined and stored for the first synchronization device to indicate whether the first synchronization device should serve as a client or a sync server in at least one subsequent synchronization session. The role information is checked when a need arises to initiate a second synchronization session between the first and the second synchronization devices. The second synchronization session is initiated from the first synchronization device in accordance with the role information.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to configuring a synchronization session, and in particular to selecting the role of a synchronization device for a synchronization session. Background technique [0002] Data in portable terminals such as portable computers, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) devices, mobile stations or pagers can be synchronized with network application databases, desktop computer application or other communication system databases. In particular data from calendar and email apps are usually synced. Synchronization has been based on the use of different proprietary protocols not commonly used with each other. This already limits the number of usable terminals or data types and creates difficulties for users. Especially in mobile communication, it is important to acquire and update data regardless of the terminal and application used. In order to achieve more efficient synchronization of application data, SyncML (Synchronization Markup L...
