Embodiment Construction

[0037] figure 1 is a schematic illustration of an example cellular telephone system. The illustrated system can use any number of multiple access modulation techniques to facilitate communication between a large number of system mobile stations or mobile telephones and base stations. Such multiple access communication system technologies include: Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and AM modulation schemes such as amplitude companding single sideband. The spread spectrum modulation technique of CDMA, disclosed in the aforementioned US Patent No. 4,901,307, has many significant advantages over the modulation techniques of other multiple access communication systems and is therefore preferred.

[0038] In a typical CDMA system, each base station transmits a unique pilot signal, which consists of transmitting a "pilot carrier" on a corresponding pilot channel. The pilot signal is an unmodulated,...

Abstract

A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating at the second cellular communication system an authentication code as the result of applying an algorithm to a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. An authentication code is also generated at the first cellular communication system as the result of applying an algorithm to the private key and the random number. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communication system is then transmitted to a mobile station in a data packet, and, from there, the authentication code is transmitted to the second cellular communication system. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communications system is then compared with the authentication code generated at the second cellular communications system.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application has priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 340172, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Effecting Handoff Between Different Cellular Communications Systems," filed November 7, 2001; and to Attorney No. 020045 has priority, the latter titled "Method and Apparatus For Effecting HandoffBetween Different Cellular Communications Systems", filed on February 14, 2002; this application also has priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 350401, later The author titled "GSMAuthentication, Encryption and Other Feature Support in a CDMA 1x Network Using a GSM-1x MSC", submitted on January 17, 2002. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to methods and apparatus for authentication in different cellular communication systems. Background technique [0004] The so-called Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modulation technique is one of several techniques for communicati...
