Problems solved by technology

For example, government agencies such as the FCC may place limits on the maximum amount of power that can be transmitted
A system employing a main system unit and a remote unit may inadvertently violate this limit if the gain / loss between the main system unit and the remote unit changes due to temperature changes, aging effects, etc.
For example, if the remote unit is transmitting close to the maximum allowable power output level, and the amount of loss in the system decreases (or the amount of gain increases), the system may inadvertently exceed the maximum allowable power output level
[0007] Further complicating this issue is the dynamic control of power in some systems to ensure that power is delivered to subscriber stations at the most desired level

Embodiment Construction

[0022] 1 is a forward link diagram of a system 100 for providing automatic calibration for a communication system including a main system unit (MSU) 101 and a remote unit (RU) 103 in accordance with the disclosed methods and apparatus. The MSU 101 receives signals from a transmitting radio station, such as a base station of a cellular communication system. It is assumed that a base station transmits a signal which cannot be satisfactorily received at the intended receiving device, such as a mobile station of a cellular communication system. Thus, signals received by the MSU are relayed from the MSU 101 to the RU 103 on the wireline 105 . In some cases, the wired lines are relatively long. For example, if MSU 101 is on top of a relatively tall building (with over 40 floors), and RU 103 is on the lowest floor, the wired line between MSU 101 and RU 103 can be hundreds of meters long.

[0023] In at least some cases, MSU 101 and RU 103 each have active amplifiers that provide ga...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for continuous calibration within a communication system coupling a main system unit to one or more remote units via relatively long wires. On the forward link, measurements are taken at the input of the master unit and at the output of the remote unit. On the reverse link, when the dominant signal is applied to one of the remote units, the input of the remote unit and the output of the master unit are measured. These measurements are made on a controlled signal during the initialization process and during normal operation. A reference gain for the system is determined from measurements made during initialization. The system gain during normal operation is then dynamically compared to the system reference gain. A control signal is generated based on the difference between the reference gain and the current gain under normal operation. The control signal is used to adjust the current gain so that the gain value is maintained within a predetermined range of the reference signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communications, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for automatically adjusting the amount of gain or loss within a communications system in which signals are relayed between a host system unit and a remote unit. Background technique [0002] Modern communication systems are an essential part of society today. One such system is a wireless cellular communication system. In a wireless cellular communication system, communications between users are directed through one or more base stations. The term forward link refers to communication from base stations to subscriber stations and the term reverse link refers to communication from subscriber stations to base stations. A subscriber station is a device used by an individual who subscribes to a communication service from a communication provider. For example, a person using a conventional cellular telephone is a subscriber to cellular telephone service provide...
