Abstract

A character input device including a set of character input keys and one or more mode change keys is disclosed. Each character input key is associated with a plurality of characters. By activating only the character input keys, one level of characters can be entered. However, different secondary, tertiary and quaternary characters can be input by activating the character input key together with the mode change key. The mode change key can be used in temporary mode, where only a second, third and fourth level character is entered. Optionally, the mode change key can be used in the basic mode, where a series of secondary, tertiary and quaternary character strings are entered.
