[0070] Foam pads were prepared using the same method and the same non-fugitive catalyst as Comparative Example 2, but in these examples, the aromatic diacid ester diol was added to the polyol premix. For Example 3, standard and commercially available polyester polyol (PEP, sold by Invista of Wilmington, NC under the trade name 2540 sales), while in Example 4, the same PEP was added but in a larger amount (2.0PPHP). The 2540 polyol comprises an aromatic diacid ester diol of general formula (I), derived from terephthalic acid and diethylene glycol.

Abstract

A composition for making a polyurethane foam includes a non-fugitive tertiary amine urethane catalyst and an aromatic diacid ester diol or substituted carbamate thereof. Foams prepared from the reaction of a polyol and an organic isocyanate in the presence of these ingredients show excellent resistance to deterioration of physical properties upon humid ageing.

More specifically, the present invention relates to additives that reduce the degradation of polyurethane foams under wet aging conditions. Background technique [0002] Polyurethane foams are widely known and used in the automotive, housing and other industries. Such foams are prepared by reacting polyisocyanates with polyols in the presence of catalysts, usually tertiary amines. Unfortunately, tertiary amine catalysts tend to be malodorous and tend to be highly volatile due to their low molecular weight. To overcome this problem, polyurethane manufacturers have attempted to achieve near-zero amine levels by employing "non-fugitive" tertiary amine catalysts that remain in the foam during and after formation emission.
