Embodiment approach

[0009] According to an example embodiment of the invention, the light is detected with directional information characterizing the light being detected. The direction information is used with the detected light to generate a virtual image corresponding to one or both of the refocused image and the corrected image.

[0010] According to another example embodiment of the present invention, two or more objects at different depths of focus in a scene are imaged, wherein portions of the scene corresponding to the respective objects are imaged at different focal planes. Light from a scene is focused on a physical focal plane and detected together with information characterizing the direction from which the light reaches a specific location on the physical focal plane. For at least one object at a depth of field that is not in focus on the physical focal plane, a virtual focal plane is determined that is different from the physical focal plane. Using the detected light and its direct...

Abstract

Image data is processed to facilitate focusing and/or optical correction. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, an imaging arrangement collects light data corresponding to light passing through a particular focal plane. The light data is collected using an approach that facilitates the determination of the direction from which various portions of the light incident upon a portion of the focal plane emanate from. Using this directional information in connection with value of the light as detected by photosensors, an image represented by the light is selectively focused and/or corrected.

Description

[0001] Related Patent Documents [0002] This patent document claims pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Applications Serial No. 60 / 615,179 filed October 1, 2004, and Serial No. 60 / 647,492 filed January 27, 2005 priority of the U.S. Provisional Patent Application of , both of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to imaging applications, and more particularly to processing image data to focus and / or correct the image data. Background technique [0004] Imaging applications such as those involving cameras, video cameras, microscopes, telescopes, etc. are generally limited by the amount of light collected. That is, most imaging devices do not record most information about the distribution of light entering the device. For example, conventional cameras such as digital still cameras and video cameras do not record most information on the distribution of light entering ...
