Embodiment Construction

[0029] According to one aspect of the invention, as shown in FIG. 1 , the ends of a symmetrically shaped sock-like preform 10 comprising a direction 16 substantially parallel to 0° may be open or closed. The warp fibers 12 and the weft or hoop fibers 14 are substantially parallel to the 90° or hoop direction 18. As used herein, hoop or weft fibers and 90° direction refer to fibers and directions circumferentially around the preform, while warp fibers and 0° direction refer to hoop fibers perpendicular to the preform. The symmetrically shaped preform 10 can be woven using conventional three-dimensional jacquard weaving. The warp and weft fibers can be any fiber type used to weave the preform. Additionally, the fibers may be pre-impregnated with a polymeric resin.

[0030] Referring to Figure 2, a symmetrically shaped preform 10 is placed on a fixed mandrel 20 with the warp fibers 12 oriented substantially perpendicular to the rotating mandrel 22 and the weft or hoop fibers 14...

Abstract

A device for obtaining off-axis reinforcement of a woven object (10) is made up of a fixed mandrel (20) and a rotating mandrel (22). The rotating mandrel (22) is connected to the fixed mandrel (20) by shaft that rotates through the middle of the fixed mandrel (22). The shaft allows the rotating mandrel (22) to move up and down in relation to the fixed mandrel (20). A portion of the woven object (10) can be clamped to the fixed mandrel (20) while a second portion of the woven object (10) can be clamped to the rotating mandrel (22). When rotated, the rotating mandrel (22) causes the warp fibers (12) in the woven object (l0) to twist off the 0 < DEG > direction while fill or hoop fibers (14) remain substantially parallel to the 90 DEG direction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to off-axis reinforced symmetric and asymmetric shapes and methods for forming symmetric and asymmetric shapes with off-axis reinforced seamless fabric structures. Background technique [0002] A radome is a covering used in the aerospace industry that shields an antenna, radar, or similar device from the surrounding environment. For example, a radome may be used to protect the antenna from high winds, icing, and / or temperature extremes in the area surrounding the device. Depending on the application of the device, these devices are susceptible to damage from the adverse effects of rain, heat, corrosion, pressure, and other sources of damage when left unprotected. [0003] Radomes for aerospace applications typically have an axisymmetric or symmetrical shape, typically in the form of a cone, hemisphere, paraboloid of revolution, or semi-ellipsoid of revolution. However, radomes of these shapes cannot meet radar cross sec...
