Problems solved by technology

[0004] While an inertia brake meets the requirement to reduce the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft, it may consist of several separate components, which adds to the complexity of installing it on the vehicle
Also, the helical springs space the pads through guide studs, which may bind and / or wear out over time

Embodiment Construction

[0013] FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of an exemplary vehicle powertrain. In the illustrated vehicle power transmission system, the provided clutch assembly includes a clutch release mechanism 10 , which is selectively operated by a vehicle operator by manipulating a clutch pedal (not shown) with his or her feet. The movement of the clutch pedal is transmitted to the clutch release member 12 through the link mechanism 11 . Drive may also be by automatic mechanisms, such as by electric servomechanisms or fluid pressure drives (neither shown).

[0014] In an exemplary clutch assembly, a single-plate (shown) or multi-plate friction clutch 14 drivingly couples the engine 16 with the transmission assembly 18 for rotation about an axis 20 . A clutch housing 22 , sometimes referred to as a bell housing, connects the engine block of the engine 16 with the housing of the transmission assembly 18 . A flywheel 24 is rotatably fixed to a crankshaft 26 of the engine 16 . A driven plate 2...

Abstract

A brake assembly (50) for slowing rotation of a shaft (30) is provided that includes a first reaction member (52), a second member (54) attachted to and a moveably separated from the first reaction member (52) by a resilient strap (56), and a rotor (58) rotatably driven by and slideably disposed on the shaft (30). The rotor (58) is retained between the first and second reaction members (52, 54) by the resilient strap (56). The strap (56) separates the first and second reaction members (52, 54) to allow the rotor (58) to rotate freely and is resiliently compressible to allow the first and second reaction members (52, 54) to selectively and frictionally engage the rotor (58). A vehicle powertrain system that includes a brake assembly (50) according to the present invention is also provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an inertial brake, and relates to an inertial brake assembly used in conjunction with a friction clutch on a heavy-duty truck. Background technique [0002] The inertia brake is a device used to quickly reduce the speed of the input shaft of the gearbox to facilitate the shifting of the gears in the gearbox. Without the use of the inertia brake, the time required for the transmission to change gears increases significantly, complicating transmission operation in some drive modes. [0003] The inertia brake may include a disc-shaped rotor splined to a transmission input shaft and driven by a master clutch disengagement mechanism when the master clutch is in a disengaged state. In one design, the rotor is disposed between two coil spring-separated discs that contain a friction material to engage the rotor. The disengagement mechanism moves between an engaged position (closer to the clutch) and a disengaged position (closer to t...
